Sweet, magical, Maple Canyon. This place is seriously majestic and I can't even really explain why. The climbing consists of conglomerate rock embedded with chossy cobbles. Mainly overhanging, the holds can feel like super slopey polished loaves, oddly incut jugs, or you can use the space where a choss pebble used to be as a shallow sloper. You feel like a monkey climbing here. Big, gymnastic, dynamic moves to pretty big holds. Fitness is needed if you wanna do anything in the Pipedream cave.

Lovin the cobbles

A typical day in Maple started with a good nights sleep after reading some Carlos Castaneda: A Separate Reality.  I would sleep in while Ali went on some epic trail run then we would go out to climb around 11. No waiting was needed here as most things were in the shade. There were 5.11s galore so it was easy to get a good warm up. Most classics were perma-drawed which made getting in a lot of pitches fairly easy. There was even a classic multi pitch that we did on one of our rest days. It was absolutely terrifying with all the choss cobbles!!

Viking-ettes!

We ended up finding fun projects and good friends at the Pipedream cave and spent a lot of time there. I can only explain the entire Maple experience as one thing: FUN! Everything about this place was perfect. Rainbows galore, good weather, fun, dynamic climbing, clean bathrooms, nice place to shower in town, cheap camping, good people, good food in town.

Trying to gain fitness on Diggler at the Pipedream cave

Maple Canyon is for sure on the list for next summer. It seems like the place to gain endurance then maybe hit up Rifle after you got some fitness under your belt. This place holds a special place in my heart. I cannot wait to go back!
